Bence Jones Protein
Why Is This Test Done?
Notes:
DESCRIPTION OF TEST:
Bence Jones Protein(Urine)
It consists of dimer of either kappa or lambda light chains from immunoglobulins.
METHODOLOGY:
Biochemical Method based on the unique property of precipitation of BJ Proteins at 40-60 degree C and resolubilisation at 100 degree C.Upon cooling, the precipitate will reappear around 60oC and will dissolve again below 40oC.
LIMITATIONS:
This is only a screening test.
CONFIRMATORY TESTS:
Immunoelectrophoretic methods, especially immunofixation, are recommended because of their ability to demonstrate monoclonality and the absence of heavy chains. Immunofixation is also considered the best method to document the disappearance of the monAoclonal protein
(complete remission).
