Calcitonin

The Calcitonin Test measures the level of calcitonin, a hormone produced by the C-cells of the thyroid gland. Calcitonin plays a role in calcium and bone metabolism but is primarily used as a biomarker in medical testing. The test is most commonly used to help diagnose and monitor medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), a rare type of thyroid cancer, and to assess conditions like multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2). Elevated calcitonin levels may indicate MTC, other thyroid abnormalities, or, in some cases, non-thyroidal conditions like chronic renal failure.Patient Preparation: No special preparation is required
