Why Is This Test Done?

Anti-HBc Test Result
Interpretation
Positive (Anti-HBc IgM and Anti-HBc IgG)
A positive result for both Anti-HBc IgM and Anti-HBc IgG indicates a current or past HBV infection. The presence of Anti-HBc IgM suggests an acute or recent infection, while the presence of Anti-HBc IgG indicates either a past resolved infection or a chronic HBV carrier state. Further testing, including HBsAg and HBV DNA tests, may be needed to determine the stage of the infection and the individual's HBV status.
Negative
A negative result for both Anti-HBc IgM and Anti-HBc IgG indicates no previous exposure to HBV. The individual is susceptible to HBV infection and should consider vaccination, especially if they are at risk of exposure to the virus.
