The presence of IgM antibodies usually indicates a recent or active infection, as IgM antibodies are typically the first type of antibodies produced by the body in response to an infection.Test Description:Purpose of the Test:The HSV 1-IgM test helps to detect an early or current HSV-1 infection.It is useful when someone presents with new or recurring symptoms of herpes, such as sores or blisters around the mouth or other areas of the body.What the Test Detects:The test specifically looks for IgM antibodies to HSV-1, which appear shortly after initial exposure to the virus.IgM antibodies are usually present in the early stages of infection and tend to decline after the acute phase.When the Test is Ordered:If there are symptoms of an active infection, such as cold sores or lesions.To determine if an acute outbreak is due to HSV-1.During an outbreak to distinguish between a new infection or reactivation of a latent virus.Sample Collection:The test requires a blood sample, typically drawn from a vein in your arm.Test Procedure:A healthcare professional will clean the puncture site and use a needle to collect blood.The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
