Lipoprotein- a (LP -a)

1. LP(a) is a lipoprotein consisitng of LDL, Apo B100 & Apo(a).
2. LP(a) is an indepent risk factor for CHD in patients known or suspected to be at increased rsik due to other factors.
3. Lp(a) levels are genetically determined .
4. However an increase in LP(a) is seen in :
* Estrogen depletion.
* Hypercholesterolemia.
* Severe hypothyroidism.
* Renal failure
* Nephrotic syndrome.
* Uncontrolled diabetes.
5. Lp(a) should not be measured during acute inflammation and for 1 month after a myocardial infarction or stroke.
