Interpretation
Increased Levels
High TIBC levels may suggest iron deficiency anemia, as the body tries to increase iron-binding capacity to compensate for low iron levels. It can also be seen in certain conditions like pregnancy, chronic inflammation, or liver disease. Further evaluation is necessary to determine the underlying cause.
Decreased Levels
Low TIBC levels may indicate iron overload disorders such as hereditary hemochromatosis, where iron-binding capacity is reduced due to excessive iron accumulation. It can also be seen in conditions like chronic kidney disease or certain types of anemia. Additional testing is required to identify the underlying cause.
