The 24-hour urinary albumin test measures the amount of albumin (a type of protein) in your urine over a 24-hour period. Albumin is normally found in the blood, and only very small amounts are usually filtered into the urine. Elevated levels in the urine may indicate kidney damage or other health conditions.
Purpose of the Test:
- To assess kidney function and detect early signs of kidney damage.
- To monitor conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or chronic kidney disease.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for kidney-related conditions.
Procedure:
Collection: You will need to collect all urine produced in a 24-hour period. Here’s how it typically works:
- On the first day, discard the first morning urine and record the time.
- Collect all urine for the next 24 hours in a special container provided by the lab.
- Store the container in a cool place (usually refrigerated).
- Return the container to the lab at the end of the 24-hour period.
Analysis: The urine sample is then analyzed to determine the amount of albumin.
