Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation used to assess body weight relative to height, providing an estimate of whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. It is widely used as a general indicator of health risks associated with body weight, though it does not directly measure body fat or overall health.
BMI Categories:
Underweight: BMI < 18.5- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 – 29.9
- Obesity (Class I): BMI 30 – 34.9
- Obesity (Class II): BMI 35 – 39.9
- Extreme Obesity (Class III): BMI ≥ 40
BMI does not differentiate between muscle and fat, and it may not accurately reflect body composition, especially in athletes, older adults, or people with high muscle mass. It should be used alongside other health assessments for a complete evaluation.
