CA125 - Ovarian Cancer marker
  • Overview

What is the CA-125 Test?
The CA-125 test measures the level of the CA-125 protein in the blood. CA-125 (Cancer Antigen 125) is a protein that is often found in higher levels in the blood of women with certain types of cancer, particularly ovarian cancer. However, elevated CA-125 levels can also be associated with other conditions, both benign and malignant.

Purpose of the CA-125 Test:

  1. Ovarian Cancer Screening and Monitoring:

    • Screening: The CA-125 test is sometimes used to help detect ovarian cancer in women who are at high risk or have symptoms suggestive of ovarian cancer.
    • Monitoring: It helps monitor the progression of ovarian cancer or the effectiveness of treatment. Rising levels may indicate that the cancer is not responding to treatment or has recurred.
  2. Diagnosis of Pelvic Masses:

    • The test can assist in evaluating pelvic masses or abnormal findings from imaging studies, helping to differentiate between malignant and benign conditions.
  3. Assessment of Other Conditions:

    • Elevated CA-125 levels can also be seen in other cancers (e.g., endometrial, fallopian tube) and non-cancerous conditions like endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or fibroids.

Sample Type:
Blood sample (serum).
