LIVER FUNCTION TEST - LFT
  • Overview

Preparation: Fasting is generally not required

Procedure: A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm.

Description:

A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a panel of blood tests used to assess the health and function of the liver. It helps diagnose liver diseases, monitor the progression of liver conditions, and evaluate the effects of medications on the liver.

Common Components of an LFT:

  1. Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT): Measures the level of ALT enzyme, which is primarily found in the liver. Elevated levels can indicate liver damage or inflammation.

  2. Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST or SGOT): Measures the level of AST enzyme, found in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. Elevated levels can suggest liver damage or disease but can also be due to issues in other organs.

  3. Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Measures the level of ALP enzyme, which is involved in breaking down proteins. Elevated levels can indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or bone disorders.

  4. Bilirubin: Measures the level of bilirubin, a substance produced from the breakdown of red blood cells. Elevated bilirubin levels can indicate liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells).

  5. Albumin: Measures the level of albumin, a protein made by the liver. Low levels can indicate liver disease, kidney problems, or malnutrition.

  6. Total Protein: Measures the total amount of protein in the blood, including albumin and globulins. Abnormal levels can suggest liver disease or other conditions affecting protein production or loss.
