RETROVIRUS I & II
  • Overview

What is the Retrovirus I & II Antibody Test?
The Retrovirus I & II Antibody test is a blood test used to detect antibodies against Human T-Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV) types I and II, which are retroviruses that can cause chronic infections and are associated with certain types of leukemia, lymphoma, and neurological disorders. The test helps identify whether an individual has been exposed to these retroviruses, either as part of routine screening or due to clinical suspicion of infection.

Purpose of the Retrovirus I & II Antibody Test:

  1. Screen for HTLV Infections:

    • Detects HTLV-I and HTLV-II antibodies to determine exposure, particularly in individuals at risk due to geographical prevalence or high-risk behaviors.
  2. Diagnose HTLV-Associated Conditions:

    • Assists in diagnosing conditions like adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP).
  3. Screening in Blood Donors:

    • Used as part of routine screening for blood donors to prevent transmission through blood transfusions.
  4. Monitor Immune System Disorders:

    • Assists in evaluating unexplained immune system dysfunction in patients presenting with symptoms related to HTLV infection.

Sample Type:
Blood sample (serum).

Preparation for the Test:

  • Fasting: Fasting is not required for the Retrovirus I & II Antibody test. You can eat and drink normally unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider.
  • Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, as they generally do not impact the test results.

Collection Method:

  • A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm using a sterile needle. The sample is then analyzed in the laboratory to detect antibodies against HTLV-I and HTLV-II.
