Stool examination involves analyzing a sample of stool (feces) to diagnose or monitor various gastrointestinal conditions. The examination can include several different tests and observations:
Microscopic Examination: Identifies the presence of parasites, bacteria, and other microorganisms, as well as signs of inflammation or blood.
Chemical Tests: Detects substances such as blood (occult blood test), fats (for malabsorption issues), or other markers indicating disease.
Culture and Sensitivity: Grows and identifies pathogenic bacteria or fungi from the stool sample to determine the best treatment.
Occult Blood Test: Tests for hidden (occult) blood in the stool, which can indicate bleeding in the digestive tract.
Ova and Parasites Test: Looks for eggs, larvae, or adult forms of parasites.
This examination is useful for diagnosing infections, digestive disorders, malabsorption issues, and conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or colorectal cancer.
