The Vitamin D3 (1,25-Dihydroxycholecalciferol) Test measures the active form of vitamin D in the blood. This test evaluates the level of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, also known as calcitriol, which is the hormonally active form of vitamin D. It plays a critical role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone health, and overall mineral balance. This test is typically ordered when there is a suspicion of disorders related to vitamin D metabolism, such as kidney disease, parathyroid disorders, or rare genetic conditions affecting vitamin D.
Unlike the more common 25-hydroxy vitamin D test, which measures vitamin D status for bone health, the 1,25-dihydroxy test is more specific to the regulation of calcium and is not generally used to assess vitamin D deficiency.
